27 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES (2006-2012)

We are delighted that our students have done Singapore and Hwa Chong proud with excellent results on the world stage.

Between 2006 and 2012, Hwa Chong students won a total of  27 World Championship titles in various fields.

These international competitions attract thousands of entries from top schools, universities and research institutes in different countries across different continents.

To emerge champions, our students had to display a whole range of skills from future problem solving, creativity, team building, mathematical prowess, entrepreneurship to out-of-the-box thinking.

World Scholar's Cup (2010, 2011 and 2012)

In 2010, a Hwa Chong student swept 5 of the top honours at the World Scholar's Cup (Global Tournament, Senior Division), winning the Overall Individual Champion title. Team Hwa Chong was awarded 4 of the top accolades, including Overall 2nd Runner-up.

In 2011, Hwa Chong took home 6 of the top honours at the World Scholar's Cup (Global Tournament, Senior Division), including the Best Overall Senior award. The Hwa Chong team was awarded Overall Team Second, and also brought home the individual and team firsts in the Scholar's Challenge and Scholar's Bowl.

In 2012, Team Hwa Chong posted their best showing yet at the World Scholar’s Cup.  They swept the overall Team Championship awards in BOTH the Senior and Junior Divisions.  Our students also bagged several individual honors, including the Best All-Round Individual awards in BOTH divisions.

The World Scholar's Cup is an annual academic tournament that tests the participants' knowledge in a plethora of disciplines, ranging from the arts to the sciences. The event sees participation from about 280 top schools from 30 countries.

60th European Music Festival for Young People (2012)

The Hwa Chong Choir impressed international jury, and sang their way to the First Prize cum laude, at the 60th European Music Festival for Young People, held in Neerpelt, Belgium.

Held annually, the festival caters to choir and instrumental ensembles in alternate years. Each year, the festival draws four to six thousand young people, from all over the world, to pit their musical talents.

Dance Grand Prix Italia (2012)

Hwa Chong’s Music and Dance has done Singapore proud, once again, by winning the Overall Dance Grand Prix Championship, at the largest dancing event in Europe, Dance Grand Prix Italia.

Despite facing stiff competition from some 1,100 international participants, our dancers swayed the judges, who are experts from various prestigious dance companies, to take home the following additional awards: Best Ethnic Dance, Best Contemporary Piece and Best Choreography.

International Regions Mathematics League (2009 and 2011)

A team of students from Hwa Chong emerged as World Champion at the prestigious International Regions Mathematics League (IRML), outperforming traditional powerhouses from China and the US after 4 grueling rounds of competition.

The IRML invites some of the best and brightest students worldwide to compete in the international competition. It is an extension of the American Regions Mathematical League (ARML) that began in 1976. Every year, the ARML competition attracts exceptionally talented US students in Mathematics from top schools like Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology to take part.

World Junior Wushu Championships (2008 and 2010)

Twice, a Hwa Chong student brought home the Gold medal for the 2nd International Cudgel event at the World Junior Wushu Championships. He bagged the title once in 2008 and again in 2010.

The World Junior Wushu Championships is an international sporting event organised by the International Wushu Federation for male and female competitors below 18 years of age. In 2010, the tournament saw over 700 participants from more than 40 countries competing in both the Taolu and Sanda competition.

Future Problem Solving Program International (2007, 2008 and 2010)

Hwa Chong students clinched the 1st and 2nd prizes at the FPSPI, held at Colorado State University from 31 May to 3 June 2007.

In 2008, Hwa Chong made history by being the FIRST Singapore School to clinch the title of Overall Champion in the competition. Team Hwa Chong clinched the award for the Category of Community Problem Solving in the Future Problem Solving Competition held between 28 May and 1 June in Michigan, USA.

In 2010, Team Hwa Chong once again lifted the Championship trophy for their project, Operation Mozzie: A Scientific Solution to a Community Problem, in the Senior Division, Social and Political Category. FPSPI 2010 was held between 10 and 13 June at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, Minnesota, USA.

Each year, around 250,000 students from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, the United States and Singapore compete in this competition.

Festival of Songs Olomouc (2010)

A prestigious international choral competition held in Olomouc, the Czech Republic, the 38th Festival of Songs saw tough competition from 106 choirs from 11 countries.

The Hwa Chong Choir sang their way to the hearts of the 20-member international panel of judges to emerge as the FIRST choral group from Singapore to attain the Overall Championship title at this competition.

Purple Comet International Mathematics Competition (2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010)

For 4th time, Hwa Chong students have emerged WORLD CHAMPIONS in the prestigious international mathematical competition, PURPLE COMET On-line Math Meet 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.

In 2010, competing against 1,617 teams from some of the best US high schools like Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Monta Vista and Stuyvesant, our students clinched the coveted 1st Prize for the fourth time.

Barcelona Dance Award (2010)

31 dancers from Hwa Chong's Music and Dance Society (Modern Dance Division) swept 2 Championship titles in the Choreography and Ethnic Dance Categories at the prestigious 24th Barcelona Dance Award.

Each year, the Barcelona Dance Award draws participation from about 1,500 dancers worldwide.

Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Mathematics Tournament Online Competition (2010)

6 Hwa Chong students emerged Champion at the Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Mathematics Tournament Online Competition (HMMT) 2010.

The HMMT is a prestigious annual mathematics tournament for high school students organised by Harvard and MIT. Every year, the tournament sees close to 1,000 participants from some of the best international schools, making it one of the largest mathematics competitions in the world.   

International Biology Olympiad (2009)

Two Hwa Chong students have done Singapore and the school proud by coming in 1st & 3rd in the WORLD at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2009.

Held in Tsukuba Japan (12-19 July 2009), this year's IBO competition is the largest ever, with 221 international participants (maximum 4 representatives from each country) from 59 countries, including traditional powerhouses like China, USA, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Germany and the UK.

This year, 3 out of 4 students representing Singapore at the 2009 IBO were from Hwa Chong. Our 3 students won 2 GOLD and 1 SILVER.

Oracle ThinkQuest Competition (2009)

Specially selected from among 955 teams from 83 countries, a team of Hwa Chong students emerged as Champions in the prestigious ThinkQuest Competition 2009 (under 19 Category) with their innovative ICT portals entitled "LEAD Portal - Bringing out the Leader in YOU!"

This global competition challenges student teams to develop interactive educational portals on topics of their choosing and demonstrate critical 21st century skills, including teamwork, technology, and communication skills.

Stanford Global Innovation Tournament (2008)

A joint team of 5 Hwa Chong Institution students and 3 high school students from the Loudoun County Academy of Science in Virginia worked across borders and twelve time zones to clinch the highly prestigious Extreme Collaboration Award in the Stanford University Global Innovation Tournament. 

Communicating mainly by email across several time zones, the team successfully built "something of value" out of plastic water bottles, and also created a short video explaining the project on YouTube.

More than 61 institutions from 14 countries participated in the Stanford University Global Innovation Tournament.  Our boys did both Singapore and Hwa Chong proud by winning one of the 22 Global Awards given from among 84 semi-finalists.

5th World Choir Games (2008)

In July 2008, the Hwa Chong Choir became WORLD CHAMPION in the highly prestigious 5th WORLD CHOIR GAMES held in GRAZ, AUSTRIA. 

The Choir earned themselves 2 GOLD Medals in the Folklore and Mixed Choir categories.  They were ranked FIRST in the Mixed Choir category. 

The 5th World Choir Games in Graz 2008 is arguably the largest competition in the history of choir music, with 71 international jurors and about 441 ensembles from 93 nations taking part.  There were more than 600 performances in 28 different categories.

Intelligent Ironman Creativity Contest (2007)

Hwa Chong clinched the World Championship title in the Intelligent Ironman Creativity Contest, held in Taiwan.  Competition for the prestigious title is intense. 

Each year, more than 30 teams from countries like Germany, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore take part in this demanding multi-disciplinary competition. 

Our students went through 72 hours of contest, overcoming different challenging tasks to finally emerge World Champions.

Global Talentrepreneur Innovation & Collaboration Business Competition (2007)

We won the world championship with our students' business plan out-performing teams from the US, Panama, Mexico, Taiwan and Japan.

In the international grand finals, our boys competed against and triumphed over the team from the US. 

Held in Taipei between 23 and 28 July, the competition required them to write a comprehensive business plan and present their ideas before an international panel of 15 judges comprising professors, government officials and venture capitalists. 

The team was invited to present their project at Keio University the next year. Our team was mainly from High School with an average age of 17 years and untrained in entrepreneurship, while the youngest in rival teams was 18 with qualifications as high as PhD in the relevant field.

Odyssey of The Mind World Finals (2007)

Hwa Chong clinched the World Champion Award for Odyssey of The Mind World Finals, held at Michigan State University from 23 May to 26 May.  Each year, the highly prestigious international creative problem-solving competition attracts more than 3000 finalists from countries like Australia, China, HK, Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Germany, Poland, USA, and Singapore. 

To qualify for the International Finals, all the finalists had to emerge champions in their respective state/country.
